Our second installment is on location in Iceland.
Sample Itinerary – private tour
Day 1: USA arrivals expected in the early morning (assumed around 07.00hrs)
You will be met at the airport by your guide who will take you to your accommodation, the Hotel Borg in Reykjavik, explaining
the scenery along the way. The driver will remain at your disposal for the rest of the morning and in the afternoon he will take you
to the first Game of Thrones filming location on this trip: Thingvellir National Park, the stomping ground of the White Walkers.
Here you will have the opportunity to walk in the impressive rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
This is also the site of the original Althing, the oldest democratic parliament in the world.
Day 2: Reykjavik – Akureyri – Myvatn
Early on your second day, your guide will take you to the domestic airport in Reykjavik to catch a 45min flight north to Akureyri,
Iceland’s second largest city. For landing you will fly into Eyjafjördur, one of the longest fjords in the country, surrounded by mountains
reaching 1500 m / 4921 ft. The Arctic Circle is only 60 km / 37.28 miles north of this point.
From Akureyri your guide will drive you to the second area of Game of Thrones filming locations, around Myvatn, where the
majority of the scenes from North of the Wall were filmed. You will see the beautiful Godafoss – the waterfall of the gods,
Hofdi – Milkwater River, Kalfastrond – where you will find the path of the men from the Night watch and the camp of the Wildlings,
Grjotagja – the Cave where Jon Snow and Ygritte spent a romantic moment.
You will also have time to take in the Dimmuborgir unique and towering lava formations and Hverir with its sizzling and
bubbling sulphur mud pots. To add to your Game of Thrones knowledge, your guide will tell you about the rich folklore
and stories of the hidden people and trolls.
This evening will be enjoyed in the relaxed environment of the hotel Laxa by the lake Myvatn.
This area is famous for its bird life, home to more species of ducks than any other place on earth.
Day 3: Myvatn – Husavik – Reykjavik
On this day you will experience the astounding force of the Dettifoss waterfall, up close and personal. Dettifoss is described as ‘the beast’ in contrast to the Godafoss falls which are described as ‘the beauty’. Your guide will then drive you to the north Atlantic coastline and on to Husavik. Husavik is the largest town in the northeast, known as the whale capital of Iceland and for the first settlement on the island. In the afternoon you will take a flight back to Reykjavik and then drive to the Hotel Ranga resort located by one of Iceland’s finest salmon rivers, the East-Ranga River. Ranga boasts a gourmet restaurant inspired by modern Nordic cuisine with a Mediterranean twist, using local and seasonal ingredients.
Day 4: Ranga – Reynisfjara – Reykjavik
In the morning you will set off south to see the sites of the Frostfangs. Your travel will take you past the Solheimajokull glacier tongue extending down from its mother glacier, Myrdalsjokull, Iceland’s fourth largest glacier. Just west of this glacier is a much smaller one (50 km² / 19.3 miles²) but probably the most known outside Iceland, Eyjafjallajokull. On to the black sands of the Reynisfjara beach, you will see puffins nested above some impressive basalt columns. Your guide will tell you the legends behind other rock formations in the area.
For lunch on this day, we will take you to a special cave where you can sit on benches with fur throws and get a sense of what it might have been like in a Game of Thrones world, albeit with a touch of our Nordic luxury.
During this trip you will also stop at Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Yes, more waterfalls, but be prepared to be amazed at their magnificent uniqueness. There is a reason Icelanders are so proud of their waterfalls. This time the car will be able to stop close to the falls. Take some time to walk behind Seljalandsfoss and up to the top of the last Skogafoss fall for a close experience.
Back to Ranga for an early dinner and an early start to day 5.
Day 5: Ranga – Skaftafell – Fjalsarlon & Jokulsarlon – Reykjavik
On this day you will depart early, heading towards the Skaftafell glacier and National Park. Filming of The Game of Thrones took place in often harsh winter conditions at this location. With the help of crampons you will have the opportunity to do some light walking on Svínafellsjokull – the calving glacier and scene from North of the Wall (season 2). 45 minutes’ drive from Skaftafell, you will stop to take in the amazing glacial lake of Fjalsarlon. You will also stop at Jokulsarlon where you will see the ice floating out to sea. Blue and Crystal clear millenary chunks of ice make for an unbelievable photo as they are washed up on the black sands of the nearby beach. After the glacial lake visits you will head back to Reykjavik for the night – Hotel Borg.
The glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon was also a film location for the James Bond movie, Die another day.
Day 6: Departure day
Meet your driver at hotel’s lobby for tranfer to the international airport, Keflavik.
Departure to your home country or next international destination.
