Day 3 Bergen 950 years of History
B,L,D
Guided tour today with a small group. Appreciate why many people consider Bergen to be the most beautiful city in Norway on a relaxing walking tour through the city. As well as receiving fascinating details about the city’s 950-year history, your local guide will provide a true insider’s perspective on its inhabitants, known as the ‘Bergenser’. Starting from the city center, be enchanted by the maritime charm of the harbor bay, Vågen. Then navigate through the city’s narrow wooden lanes as you get to know the most important sights of Bergen. Walk past the fish market, the theatre, and the old fire station and hear how historical residents, such as Edvard Grieg and Henrik Ibsen, helped shaped Bergen. Continue to the Bryggen district to see its iconic colorful wooden houses. This World Heritage Site is popular with both locals and tourists, housing many lively cafes, restaurants, and bars. After the tour, free time to continue exploring and have dinner. Return to hotel.
Day 4 Skudeneshavn
B,L, D
Today we will get our rental car and hit the road. Please note: the guide is driving our 2 clients. It is not a self drive…
We will head south from Bergen en route to Skudeneshamn. Our first stop is beautiful Fantoft Stave Church. It is a replica of the original church.
This church was actually moved to prevent demolition and the origianl church then burt down. Skudeneshamn is famous for it´s preserved old houses. It is a small town on the Island of Karmoy between Haugesund and Stavanger. This pretty coastal town has over 225 preserved heritage houses dating from the 19th centery. We will have a stroll through town and have lunch. We will later explore the island a little and head up to Haugasund where we will spend the night. We will stay at Banken Hotel which is a refurbished old bank in Haugesund´s historic district.
Day 5 Mountains and Fjords to Flam
B,L, D
Today will hit some national parks and beautiful scenery on the way to Flam. Norway is famous for its beautiful mountain scenery and fjords, and today is no exception. We will be driving along some of Norway´s scenic tourist routes through Hardangervidda National Park and Hallingskarvet National Park.
We will stop in Eldfjord, which is one of Norway´s most photographed towns. On the way to Flam we will take the very famous Austerfjellet scenic route which covers 47km of fantastic mountain scenery. We will climb up to 1388m ( 4500feet ) which gives a fanstastic view of the fjord. Flam is a small village, but it is visited by cruise ships throughout the year, as it is one of Norway´s longest fjords. Flam is surrounded by steep mountains and roaring waterfalls. We will spend the night in another small village on a fjord called Lærdal. We will be at Lærdalsören Hotel.
Day 6 Alesund
B,L,D
We will leave Lærdal this morning after breakfast and head through the high mountains back to the coastal regions. This route follows nordfjord, another of Norway´s most famous fjords along with Geiranger, which is a very well known town in Norway with beautiful waterfalls and mountains. We will stop here before continuing to the coastal town of Alesund. Alesund is one or Norway´s most important seaports.
It has a very impressive and new fishing fleet. A large portion of Alesund relies on fishing for their economy. Alesund is rich in history, and in 1904 they had a devastating fire as many Norwegian towns did at the time because the majority of the cities were built entirely of wooden structures and houses. We will be staying in the center of town and have a special fish dinner tonight and we will stay in Hotel 1904.
Day 7 Atlantershavsvegen and the Outer Islands
B,L, D
The Atlantershavsvegen literally means the Atlantic Ocean Road. It was a much awaited road that connects many of Norway´s small fishing villages just north of Alesund. Nothing is as mighty as the ocean ‒ our most important transport route for centuries, a source of income and the starting point for innumerable recreational options. Few roads bring you closer to the ocean and let you feel part of it in the same way as Atlanterhavsvegen. Here you will feel the effects of winter storms and enjoy days of sunshine in the summer. The road is a visual delight as it curves elegantly from islet to islet over its seven bridges. The natural surroundings and feats of modern engineering combine to create a unique driving experience. The trip takes you from the fertile cultural landscape of the coast across moorland to bare crags along the weather-beaten, open bay of Hustadvika.Take time to watch the sun disappearing below the horizon from here. Atlanterhavsvegen has been described as the world’s most beautiful car drive. It is an intense experience that will give you an insight into a harsh world where you must withstand a gust of wind. We will continue from here to Kristiansund. We will stay at Hotel Thon or similar.
